Bridges

Living in where we do, whether it's the new or original Severn bridges, the old Wye bridge or a motorway flyover, bridges are a big part of the landscape. I'm not an engineers and have no interested in bridge design, but they do make great photographic subjects.

Although the original Severn Bridge is the more elegant of the two, the "new" bridge is more photogenic and I have been luck enough to photograph it on some amazing occasions - some great sunrises from the Welsh side, high spring tides at sunset from Severn Beach, the lunar eclipse and most awesome of all, the partial solar eclipse on 12 August 2026.

But there are other bridges around our corner of southeast Wales - Chepstow's historic old bridge (I've not yet managed a composition of the new tubular bridge); the Wireworks Bridge in Tintern; and the M48 motorway bridge over the Caerwent Brook. This last one is unnoticed from above, but when the Brook is in flood, which it much of the year, it is a great example of brutalist architecture.

Further afield, I've snapped a few others - the elegant Infinity Bridge and Elizabeth Quay Bridges in Stockton on Tees and Perth, WA; the surviving arch of the natural London Bridge on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, and perhaps the most famous bridge of all in Sydney.
